we went back
and forth as if
we were looking
for something we
lost or wanted to
find as if it were

the back and forth
of feeding the
chickens thinning
the carrots tending
the fire brushing
your hair saying
hello when
the neighbor
it’s taken you
twenty years
to know walks
by and stops

why the hell I said that—

it was between my toes!

astounded enough

not to know exactly
what to say and far enough away
not to
and now wending my way

I just want to say
I was blown away

whether or not
